King of Americana cool, Tommy Hilfiger, may be entering his fourth decade in the fashion industry, but he’s just getting started. If fashion emperor Tommy Hilfiger wasn’t currently hurtling through his 32nd year as one of the most successful fashion designers the world has ever known, what would he be doing?

I’ve always said that if I wasn’t designing, I’d be a rock star. From the rock concerts I went to as a teenager, to our collaborations with legends like the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Lenny Kravitz, music has always been an inspiration for my designs.

That’s not a surprising career alternative for the 67-year-old. Tommy is a rockstar, in fashion terms at least. After a couple of false starts in the late 1960s and 1970s, Hilfiger debuted his first collection 1985 - a selection of casual button-down shirts and chinos that struck a chord in New York at the time. Right now, Tommy Hilfiger is distributed in 100 countries and there are more than 1,800 retail stores throughout North America, Europe, Latin America and the Asia Pacific region. His name is as synonymous with fashion as Jagger is with rock’n’roll. Everyone has always wanted a taste of what Tommy was offering; his accessible denim designs and classic cuts gave people all over the world the opportunity to live a small part of his American dream.

The world of Tommy Hilfiger is available on Caroline Street of our Cork Street store.

Though his label’s ethos has always been rooted in bleached blonde hair, ripped denims, stars and stripes and a long, twisting American highway, his clothing is relevant in the Caroline Street menswear department of Brown Thomas in Cork city as they are in a boutique in Malibu. That’s the real secret to the Tommy appeal. If you love what he makes, you can be a part of the story. Today, Tommy’s story is all about appealing to the kids - and even grandkids - of his original 1980s customers.

Tommy Hilfiger menswear works classic American prep with a new street spirit.

His famous friends include Anna Wintour (naturally), the curator at Museo Nacional Del Prado, Madrid (one of his favourite sources of inspiration). He adores Madonna and is a fan of Amy Winehouse, “She was always a favourite singer of mine. She had the most unique voice - as soon as you heard her sing you knew it was her.”

Staying relevant and desired is all about finding the right balance between tradition and disruption, embracing new technology and trends to meet the constantly changing desires of our consumers.

A recent collaboration with Gigi Hadid certainly helped bolster that American-cool image, “Gigi is an incredible role model,” Tommy gushes, “She has achieved so much with all four of our TommyXGigi collaborative capsule collections, inspiring fans around the world with her optimism and unique, effortless style.”

As he enters his fourth decade in the industry, there’s very little left to learn about the fashion icon himself. But we did discover this; his favourite Instagram account (besides his own, of course) is Hypebeast, “It’s one of my favourites for pop culture references, which I love”, he would love to have taken a selfie with Martin Luther King Jr., “He has always been my hero - his passion, devotion and what he stood for as a leader …” And finally, we ask, what could possibly have him so enthused about another year at the helm of Tommy Hilfiger? “Our Spring 2018 family of ambassadors, Gigi Hadid, Shawn Yue, and The Chainsmokers, are all going to bring a fresh lens to our collections and connect with the next generation in a new way. And you know, fashion never stops evolving. There are always new designs to create, and new twists to add to classic pieces.

Fashion is about reinvention and not following the rules, which is what makes this industry so exciting.
