THE M·A·C MAESTRO
As we celebrate twenty years of M·A·C at Brown Thomas, we remember the famous faces who have collaborated with the brand and joined us in store, from Pamela Anderson and Fleur de Force to Linda Evangelista. Director of Make-up Artistry and resident red lip aficionado at M·A·C,
Where does backstage beauty begin for you?
I’m absolutely skin obsessed. I like beautiful flawless skin and the idea of having some transparency, of some skin coming through, of the skin being visibly healthy, dewy, shiny and plump - all of those things women want from their skin. M·A·C Face and Body is an essential which I’ve used since Day 1. It never fails to give you the most real but beautiful skin.

We've applied the perfect foundation, what's the secret to a flawless finish?
I use M·A·C’s Fix+ sprays. You spritz before or after you apply foundation and it gives you that moisture layer which takes foundation into the skin. Foundation for me doesn’t have to be about loads of coverage, it’s about having a beautiful skin surface. I think people will admire skin that looks like great skin rather than skin which looks masked.

The right product will only take us so far, what are the tips and tricks to try?
I love this whole big mascara trend. You know, that idea of slightly too much mascara but it looks great? What I always do is push the brush through the lashes in the wrong way, right to the inner eye so you’re dragging them the wrong way but when you pull them back, you’ve got the most liberal layer of mascara. And I do the same with eyebrows, I like M·A·C’s Waterproof Brow for this. Go the wrong way, then go the right way and you’ve got volume all round.

What’s your magic weapon lip?
I like a red lip. Red to me is a woman’s most powerful statement of womanliness. I compare putting on a red lip to putting on a high heel, there’s an immediate strength and femininity. My trick at the moment for red lips is not to have too much of a sharp edge. What I do is take an eyeshadow brush and slightly blur the edge, just to give a bit of softness. It’s much more feminine and I find it’s a really beautiful way of tailoring it to someone’s face.

You've said blusher is making a comeback after the spotlight on countouring. How do you get the perfect blush?
I like there to be a softness about the face that also gives a glow - the Mineralize Skinfinish Naturals does just that.
What’s your motto to make any woman feel most beautiful?
Sometimes the most powerful story is simplicity. Comb your brows, do beautiful skin and put on a bright red lip. That’s always a winner. Beauty is not about not having flaws, it’s about wearing your flaws really well. And if you look at some of the beauties of all time, they’ve always done that.
