In conversation with François Nars...

Upon watching his mother apply her makeup throughout his childhood, François Nars fell hard and fast for all things beauty. Going on to found NARS in 1994, his brand has taken the makeup industry by storm. In advance of his exclusive visit to Brown Thomas Dublin to celebrate the new NARS Boutique we speak to the Narsissist himself.

Where did it all start for you and makeup?

I poured over fashion magazines like French Vogue - my mother, my grandmother and French Vogue from the 1970s inspired me. Marie Claire was the first magazine I ever worked for as a makeup artist and I got along with everyone so well that magazines began calling me.

Who has been the most inspiring woman to influence your career?

My mother was my first muse. I was obsessed with fashion and was very lucky to have an extremely beautiful mother on who I could practice. But in a funny way she never wore a lot of makeup - she gave me an appreciation for natural beauty.

Your tongue-in-cheek names are iconic, where do they come from?

I give the products names to bring them to life, to give them a personality. It’s no longer just a tube of lipstick – it’s a movie or a character that you can identify with, a destination you travel to through products and colours. The names make the product ‘larger-than-life’.

Do you have a favourite ever NARS product?

Right now I’m loving Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation. This innovative base gives coverage in a lightweight formula that hydrates the skin while also letting it shine through. I think it is the perfect evolution of my complexion philosophy.

What is your beauty philosophy?

My philosophy is the same as when I began my career. Influenced by my mother who wore little to no foundation, I started creating beauty looks and carried this vision of her with me. Allowing the skin to show through really set me apart from other makeup artists at that time. I always used foundations with the smoothest texture and applied them with a light touch - photographers appreciated that I brought this transparency to complexion.

Does your love of photography influence your take on makeup?

Concealer combined with a tinted moisturiser gives the transparency you’re looking for in a complexion finish. You can also (very lightly) add a transparent powder with a brush - it will help set the base. There are so many new technologies and ingredients that allow makeup to perform better while still looking natural.

As NARS x Erdem launches, we’re asking how has fashion influenced your beauty collections?

Fashion is woven into everything that we do at NARS. It’s a constant source of inspiration for our artists, our team and our fans. Partnering with designers on collaborations and backstage at Fashion Week is truly the epicentre of where creativity and artistry fuse with fashion.

Your work-life balance is essential, do you think rest and relaxation is the key to staying beautiful?

Rest and relaxation is important and of course, skincare. You can’t have beautiful makeup without beautiful skin. If you don’t take care or use products that are good for your skin, your makeup will never look as good.

And finally, what is the one makeup product that every woman should own?

No matter what, a woman should always have a lipstick! What woman doesn’t like lipstick?

NARS is available to shop online and in Brown Thomas stores nationwide.
